Why Choose Atlas® 2 Post Lifts?

Atlas® Automotive Equipment has built a reputation for delivering professional-grade vehicle lifts that combine robust construction with exceptional value. Their 2 post lift lineup typically spans weight capacities from 8,000 to 15,000 lbs, offering solutions for home enthusiasts, independent repair shops, and high-volume commercial facilities alike. Each lift is generally engineered with heavy-duty components—including reinforced columns, dual hydraulic cylinders, and commercial-grade lifting mechanisms—designed to provide years of reliable service.

What sets Atlas® apart is their focus on solving real-world garage challenges. Whether you're working in a space-constrained environment with low ceilings or need extra width and height for oversized trucks, Atlas® offers specialized configurations to match your specific requirements.

Understanding Your Configuration Options

Floor Base-Plate vs. Overhead Models

Atlas® offers two distinct design approaches, each optimized for different installation scenarios:

  • Floor Base-Plate Lifts: Feature a "U" shaped design with the crossbar at floor level rather than overhead. These models may require ceiling heights as low as approximately 9'3" to 9'6" depending on the specific model, making them ideal for garages with height restrictions. Models include the BP8000, 9KBP, BP-10000, and BP12000X.
  • Overhead Models: Traditional design with an overhead crossbar. These generally require ceiling heights of approximately 12 feet or more for installation, but offer unobstructed overhead access when the vehicle is raised. Models include the 9OHSC-SS, 9KOH, OH-10X, and PV series lifts.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric vs. Hybrid Configurations

The arm configuration affects how you position vehicles on the lift:

  • Symmetric: Arms are positioned equally front-to-back, centering the vehicle between the posts. Best for trucks, vans, and vehicles where centered weight distribution is preferred.
  • Asymmetric: Arms rotate to position the vehicle slightly rearward, placing the door opening between the posts for easier entry/exit. Preferred for passenger cars where door access is important.
  • Hybrid (Symmetric/Asymmetric): Adjustable arm designs that allow you to switch between configurations depending on the vehicle. Models like the 9KOH, BP8000, and PV10PX offer this versatility.

Key Features to Consider

Safety Systems

Atlas® 2 post lifts incorporate multiple safety features, which may vary by model:

  • Automatic arm restraints that lock arms in position
  • Secondary Lock System (SLS) with spring-loaded engagement on chain-drive models
  • Single-point lock release for synchronized lowering
  • Padded automatic shut-off bars on overhead models to prevent over-lifting
  • Double safety lock systems on select models

Column and Carriage Construction

The structural integrity of your lift depends heavily on column design. Atlas® utilizes various construction methods depending on the model:

  • Single-piece formed columns on models like the 9OHSC-SS for maximum strength (requires adequate ceiling height for installation)
  • Oversized reinforced columns on heavy-duty models like the BP12000X and PV series
  • Middle welded support gussets for additional column strength on commercial-grade models
  • Extra-long carriages that provide enhanced stability and load distribution

Lifting Mechanisms

Atlas® 2 post lifts typically feature dual hydraulic cylinders (one in each column) with chain-drive or direct-drive systems. Most models include a 220-volt single-phase power unit, though specific electrical requirements should be verified for your chosen model. Lifting times generally range from approximately 45 to 60 seconds depending on capacity and cylinder configuration.

Selecting the Right Capacity

Weight capacity is one of the most critical specifications when choosing a 2 post lift. Atlas® offers models typically ranging from 8,000 to 15,000 lbs to accommodate different vehicle types:

  • 8,000-9,000 lbs: Suitable for most passenger cars, crossovers, and light-duty trucks. Ideal for home garages and shops primarily servicing consumer vehicles.
  • 10,000 lbs: A versatile mid-range capacity that handles everything from compact cars to three-quarter-ton trucks. Popular for general repair facilities.
  • 12,000 lbs: Accommodates one-ton dually trucks and heavier commercial vehicles while still managing passenger cars with low pick points.
  • 15,000 lbs: Commercial-grade capacity for large trucks, vans, and commercial vehicles. Built with extra-heavy-duty components throughout.

Important: Always select a lift with capacity exceeding your heaviest expected vehicle weight. Account for uneven weight distribution and any additional equipment or cargo that may be present during service.

Special Application Models

Extra-Wide/Extra-Tall Configurations

For shops servicing oversized vehicles, Atlas® offers specialized models with enhanced clearances. The OH-10X and PV12PX, for example, may provide additional width between columns (often over 134" outside-to-outside) and increased lifting height compared to standard models. These configurations accommodate vehicles with wide rearview mirrors, dual rear wheels, or ladder racks, and offer a clearance "fudge factor" when driving through the lift opening. The extended cylinders on these models may also provide additional lift height—beneficial for taller technicians working underneath raised vehicles.

Adjustable Height Models

Some Atlas® models offer installation flexibility with adjustable column heights. The 9KOH, for instance, can be configured at different height settings during installation to match your specific ceiling clearance. The BP12000X can be installed at two different width configurations—narrow or wide—to accommodate different vehicle types or facility layouts.

Three-Stage Arms

Heavy-duty models like the BP12000X feature three-stage telescoping arms rather than standard two-stage arms. This design provides extended reach for long-wheelbase trucks and commercial vehicles while maintaining structural integrity under heavy loads.

Installation Considerations

Concrete Requirements

Proper installation requires an adequate concrete foundation. While specific requirements vary by model and should be verified in the installation manual, 2 post lifts generally require a minimum concrete thickness of approximately 4-6 inches of reinforced concrete with appropriate compressive strength. The concrete should be level, free from cracks, and properly cured.

Mounting Options

Atlas® 2 post lifts can typically be installed using anchor bolts for permanent placement or with base plates depending on the model. Permanent mounting with anchor bolts is recommended for commercial applications where the lift position is fixed. Always follow the specific mounting instructions provided with your model.

Space Planning

Beyond the physical footprint of the lift, consider clearance requirements around the installation:

  • Allow adequate space for vehicle approach and door opening
  • Account for power unit placement (typically mounted on one column)
  • Ensure sufficient clearance for arm swing and extension
  • Consider workflow patterns and access to other equipment
  • Verify overhead clearance when the lift is fully raised with vehicle in place

Electrical Requirements

Most Atlas® 2 post lifts operate on 220-volt single-phase power, though electrical specifications should be confirmed for your specific model. Ensure proper electrical service is available at the installation location and that all electrical work is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with local codes.

Included Accessories and Adapters

Atlas® 2 post lifts typically include various adapters and accessories to accommodate different vehicle types. Inclusions vary by model but may include:

  • Solid peg-type truck adapters (often 12-piece sets)
  • Sliding lift point adapters for precise positioning
  • Double screw-up adapters
  • Truck height extensions for raised pickups and commercial vehicles
  • Installation hardware and mounting bolts

Some models may include complete adapter sets as standard equipment.

Specifications Disclaimer: All technical specifications, dimensions, capacities, and features described on this page are general guidelines and may vary by specific model. Always refer to individual product listings and official installation manuals for exact specifications, requirements, and included accessories for your chosen lift model.

Atlas Automotive Equipment 2 post lifts

Atlas 2 Post Vehicle Lifts

Atlas® 2 post car lifts are popular for a number of reasons, but mostly due to the fact that they're extremely affordable, reliable, and versatile. The Floor Base-Plate and the Symmetric/Asymmetric lifts each offer unique features that may be just what you're looking for in your home garage or commercial auto shop. whatever your specific case may be, Atlas® 2 post lifts are easy on the wallet and great on the return.

If your garage has low ceilings, a lift with a top bar will not be ideal. Instead, choose a Floor Base-Plate lift. These are "U" shaped with two posts and a base plate. The super-symmetric arms allow you to load vehicles into the lift in either an asymmetric or symmetric configuration and allow you or your technicians greater ease (depending on the type of Floor-Base Plate model you choose). These are available in 8,000 to 12,000 lb. weight capacities.

For the most lifting capacity when ceiling height is no issue, the Atlas® Symmetric/Asymmetric lifts will provide adjustable heights via the lift arm. The top of the lift has a padded automatic shut-off bar so the top of the vehicle takes damage. For large commercial trucks, Atlas® also has the Ex-Wide/Ex-Tall 2 post lifts that provides extra distance between the columns and additional height. Worried you'll be limited by your lift choice? These lifts include truck adapters as well so you can load both cars and larger vehicles into the lift. If you'd prefer, you can even make the placement of the lift permanent with anchor bolts. These are available in weight capacities of 9,000 to 15,000 lbs.

At such economical prices, we make it easy to add more lifts to your personal or commercial shop without breaking the bank. The Atlas® 2 post car lifts can be financed with low monthly fees so you can get them in your home garage or commercial shop right away to get working.
