Why Choose a 4 Post Lift for Your Garage?

Four post lifts offer distinct advantages for both hobbyists and professionals. Their stable platform design eliminates the need to position lift arms under specific vehicle jacking points, making them easier and faster to use for storage applications. The open runway design provides excellent accessibility for wheel and tire work, brake service, and exhaust system repairs. Additionally, many models are portable with optional caster kits, allowing you to reconfigure your workspace as needed.

Understanding Lift Heights and Clearance

When selecting a four post lift, ceiling height is a critical consideration. Atlas® models typically range from standard height designs to extra-tall configurations that can lift vehicles over 12 feet high. The clearance under the elevated runway determines what type of vehicle you can park below. Standard models generally provide enough clearance for sedans and compact cars, while extended-height versions accommodate SUVs and pickup trucks underneath. Always measure your available ceiling height before purchase, accounting for both the vehicle on top and sufficient headroom.

ALI Certification: What It Means for Safety

The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) certification represents independent third-party validation that a lift meets rigorous safety and performance standards. ALI-certified lifts like the Atlas® Apex models have undergone extensive structural testing and design review. While ALI certification is not legally required for home garage use in most jurisdictions, it provides valuable assurance that the equipment has been engineered and manufactured to industry-recognized benchmarks. Many commercial facilities and insurance policies specifically require ALI-certified equipment.

Runway Length and Width Considerations

Matching your lift's runway dimensions to your vehicle fleet is essential for safe operation. Wheelbase length varies significantly across vehicle types—compact cars may have wheelbases around 100-110 inches, while extended cab pickup trucks can exceed 150 inches. Atlas® offers various runway configurations, from standard lengths suitable for most passenger vehicles to extended versions designed specifically for long-wheelbase trucks. Width between runways is equally important, particularly for dual-wheel pickup trucks or vehicles with wide track widths.

Installation and Anchor Requirements

Four post lifts generally require either anchor bolts secured into concrete with proper depth and spacing, or may be certified for portable use with caster kits. Concrete slab specifications are important—typically a minimum thickness of 4-6 inches of reinforced concrete is recommended, though requirements vary by model and capacity. Some Atlas® commercial models include anchor hardware, while others require separate purchase. For portable installations using casters, verify that your floor surface is level and smooth to ensure proper operation of the locking mechanisms.

Power Requirements and Electrical Planning

Most Atlas® four post lifts operate on 220-volt single-phase power, which differs from standard household 110-volt circuits. Before installation, ensure your garage has the appropriate electrical service or plan for an electrician to install the required circuit and outlet. The power unit location should be accessible for maintenance while keeping controls within easy reach of the operator. Some models feature air-operated releases that require a compressed air source in addition to electrical power.

Maintenance and Safety Best Practices

Regular maintenance extends lift life and ensures safe operation. Cable-driven four post lifts should have cables inspected periodically for wear, fraying, or damage. Hydraulic systems require monitoring of fluid levels and annual inspection of cylinders, hoses, and fittings. The locking mechanism should be tested regularly to verify positive engagement at each lock position. Always follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule and keep the lift clean and free of debris. Never exceed the rated capacity, and always distribute vehicle weight evenly across the runways.

Important: Specifications vary by model. Always check individual product listings and manufacturer documentation for exact details on dimensions, capacities, electrical requirements, and installation specifications before purchasing.

Atlas® 4 Post Car Lifts

No matter if you're a commercial automotive shop owner or a true car hobbyist, the right lift to match your specific needs is within reach right here in our Atlas® 4 post car lifts inventory. Specializing in a variety of models, Atlas® serves the broad community of people who love working on cars.

4 post lifts are the ultimate space-savers that will help make your space more functional. When fully elevated, the clearance underneath the runway allows for a vehicle to be comfortably stored. This is ideal for those working in shops that don't have a lot of free space to part with. Even if your garage is large, these lifts make smart use of the space you do have. It helps to keep vehicles out of the way if you or your technicians are heading out for the day or working at a different lift.

There are several different models to choose from if repair or restoration is your hobby. One of these is the Apex 8. This Atlas® 4 post car lift is special in that it's ALI Certified, meaning it's been independently tested and validated as an effective, reliable piece of equipment. It has an 8,000 lb. weight capacity and a lock ladder structure. It also has a double lock safety system and a single point lock release, which makes it a worthwhile investment for your garage. Like the other Atlas® 4 post lifts, another vehicle may be store below the ramp. The lift comes with the following: rubber wheel chocks, wheel stops, steel approach ramps, and a caster kit. Anchor bolts can be purchased separately.

You may need commercial grade Atlas® 4 post car lifts if you run an auto repair or customization shop. We offer two of these models, one with a 12,000 lb. weight capacity and the other 14,000 lbs. These differ from the hobbyist lifts in that they have an air-operated single point lock release and automatic shut-off switch. Plus, the Atlas® 412 and 414 are each specifically designed for commercial use. The mounting hardware is included with your purchase.
